Treating hormonal acne requires a different approach from typical over-the-counter treatment. In fact, acne itself is more of a hormonal disease. Often, hormonal acne is due to puberty for teens, menopause and pregnancy for adult females. Read more about hormonal acne.

Typical over-the-counter treatment are NOT cut out

Yes, using normal over-the-counter treatment will NOT get rid of hormonal acne. Hormonal acne is due to hormonal imbalance INSIDE your body. Normal over-the-counter treatment works EXTERNALLY by killing bacteria and unclogging pores. Hormonal imbalance will still cause excessive sebum to be produced and acne will still come back.

Don’t get it? Easy said, hormonal acne source comes from hormonal imbalance. Normal over-the-counter treatment does NOT prevent hormonal imbalance. Since your acne source comes from hormonal imbalance, in order to STOP acne from terrorizing your life, you have to PREVENT hormonal imbalance, NOT anything else. Killing pestering bacteria and unclogging stinky pores will not solve anything. You NEED a treatment that will control your hormonal balance!

Takes some time if you go natural

Impatience and anxiousness will not help in hormonal acne treatment, especially when you are going natural. Natural treatment requires one to expel toxins off their body, so that their livers will be able to balance hormones level. However, the process of expelling toxins, balancing hormones, and regenerating of new skin cells all takes time. The process will take at least 2 months to start seeing effects.

Birth control pills and Spironolactone

For adult females, sometimes birth control pills and spironolactone are prescribed to control the production of androgen, a male sex hormones that is present in both males and females, and is largely responsible for hormonal imbalance.

In terms of controlling hormones level, both birth control pills and spironolactone seems to be quite effective. But, the problem with both of these treatment is that there are several nasty side effects. Plus the fact that birth control pills will prevent female from conceive, both of these treatment will not be suitable for a long term treatment. Read my blog post on female acne treatment.
